Chairmans News

This is the newly launched CIBSE Region website, it has been changed to be easier to use and to be more dynamic. As CIBSE Head office are no longer sending out the Annual Program Card and are moving to electronic based communication, which the Yorkshire Region decided to do last year, it is essential that the Region has a website that promotes and informs its Members of the Committee’s activities.

Last year the website did not adequately meet those requirements and hence we have invested in a new website.

Our AGM was held on the 4th May 2010. Details can be found here…..

Introduction

This is my first year of two being Chairman. This also coincided with a recession that severely hit the industry.

As a result of this not all of the key aims that I set out have been achieved.

Aims Developed and Ongoing

  • Undertake Survey with members to assess if the committee is adequately serving their needs
    • The survey however had a poor response, with only 28 responses The feedback suggests that there was no direction offered on a significant change in the direction of the Committee activities
  • Create better links with the academic institutes in the region
    • Good relationships have been developed with Leeds Metropolitan University
  • Connect better with other institutions and networks in the areas such as Integrate Yorkshire and West Yorkshire Lifelong Learning Network
    • Built Links with Women Building Links – supporting their events and attending their course and advertising through the members
  • To move to paperless communication
    • This has been achieved and the website will be re-launched next week

Aims Not Achieved

  • Continue and nurture the Young Engineers Network
    • The YEN in the region has not been as active in the preceding years
  • Connect better with other regions such as Manchester
    • Cross regional events are likely not to have any significantly different attendance than Regional organised ones
  • Connect better with the other professional institutions such as IMechE, RIBA, IET to develop co-ordinated events that reach a wider audience and hopefully achieve higher attendance
  • To engage better with a wider range of companies in the region to leverage their organisations to the wider membership in the region
