Our Judges

All of our judges have volunteered their time and expertise to help us deliver the Awards.

Some are more camera shy than others, but whether they have sent us their details or otherwise we are hugely grateful for their support. 


 


Sharon Slinger is the award-winning Director of Constructing Rainbows Limited, a company she set up to provide support for businesses who want to become more inclusive. A Chartered Quantity Surveyor and Certified Member of the British Institute of Facilities Management, Sharon has nearly 20 years’ experience of working in the construction industry for top tier main contractors, including Bovis Lend Lease, Laing O’Rourke and Carillion.

Sharon is a member of the Construction Industry Council Diversity and Inclusion Panel and a Non-Executive Director of Selby Educational Trust.

Along with three other industry professionals, Sharon co-founded and is now Chair of STEER Support & Mentoring CIC, a social enterprise formed to connect industry professional mentors to final year built environment students. STEER is currently partnering with Leeds Beckett University and University of Salford, and supported by CIBSE Yorkshire.



Karl Redmond is a member of BIM4HEALTH, a Fellow of the Leeds Sustainability Institute, has over 20 years knowledge and understanding of the built environment, FM & Real Estate markets and an MSc in Project Management. Karl is now part of the award winning Rider Levett Bucknall (RLB) and their Facility Management Consultancy team, with a focus upon the delivery of facilities and strategic asset management consultancy services, sustainability and technical advice, helping clients deliver safe and efficient built environments that are fit for purpose, economically viable and sustainable.

Karl has been actively involved with FM & AM data capture, analysis & strategic real estate planning (optimise, utilise & rationalise); operational cost and performance bench-marking and whole life cost modelling; strategy creation & business planning to deliver real estate solutions & commercial requirements; CMMS, Smart Asset & Inventory Management, BIM/GSL, IoT and Property Technology initiatives. All of which are essential to the future efficiency and improvement of our built environment and throughout the life cycle of all assets.


Professor Alan J Newall
 is currently an Associate Lecturer at Leeds Beckett University, following his retirement from his post of Head of School of The Built Environment at Northumbria University.

Alan has been associated with the development of Building Services Engineering higher education since joining Newcastle Polytechnic in 1976. He has been involved in a number of CIBSE Regional(North East) activities and National CIBSE Committees, involving Education and Training. He is currently a member of the CIBSE Degree accreditation moderator panel.
 




Edward MurphyChartered Building Services Engineer, B Eng (Hons), C.Eng, MCIBSE, MASHRAE

Edward is a graduate of University of the SouthBank, London with a degree in Building Services. He is a chartered building services engineer with a proven track record in design and project management of high profile low energy buildings. In his career to date he has been involved in the design and management of a number of award winning low carbon projects.

Most recently he has turned his attention to closing the gap between predicted design and actual in use energy use in buildings. His team won the 2013 CIBSE Performance Award for the design and implementation of 2 St Paul’s Place for the DfE, considered now to be the lowest energy sealed and comfort cooled office building on the government estate.

He recently left Mott MacDonald where he led the Sheffield based building services team to set up his own sustainability and building performance professional practice to specifically offer new and innovative approaches to customer and end user centric design of buildings and workplaces.


Dr Rick Holland is one of Innovate UK’s two regional managers across the North of England. Additionally he is an Innovation Lead in Innovate UK’s Infrastructure Systems sector team.

Rick has led several high-profile competitions and programmes relevant to the built environment.  This includes the £4m Building Whole-Life Performance programme, £4m Future Energy Management of Buildings programme, analysis of the £17m Retrofit for the Future programme, and the £1m digital toolkit for Building Information Modelling (BIM).

Rick is a Chartered member of CIBSE and has twice chaired the innovation stream of CIBSE’s annual conference. In 2006 he gained a PhD in smart property technologies.

Rick’s current role is to align Innovate UK’s activities and strategies for collaboration and partnership across the North of England.  He is delighted to judge the CIBSE Yorkshire awards for a second year as they help shine the spotlight on a valuable innovation cluster for the North.




Craig Stott is an Architect and Senior Architecture Lecturer at the Leeds School of Architecture, Leeds Beckett University. Originally trained as a Structural Engineer, Craig is Technology coordinator for the Architecture courses and a founding member of the Technical Studies in Architecture group. He leads the undergraduate design studio CITYzen Agency which situates its explorations in neglected places of post-industrial cities. The studio is linked to Project Office, an RIBA Chartered Practice established as a design and research collaboration of staff and students to make ethical, social and resilient architecture, which Craig co-directs.

In 2016 Project Office completed New Wortley Community Centre, the largest student designed live project to be built in the UK to date, which subsequently won the Live Project Network Category of the SEED (Social, Economic, Environmental Design) Awards, presented at SFI17 (Structures for Inclusion Conference) in Portland, Oregon in 2017. The project also made the shortlist of the RIBA Journal’s MacEwan Award in 2018.

As a first time judge for CIBSE, Craig is excited by the opportunity to help raise the profile and quality of the Yorkshire regions built environment.  


Ian Hurst BEng (Hons), CEng, MCIBSE, MIEEM.  As a Projects Director at Mott MacDonald, Ian leads the Building Services teams in their Sheffield and Leeds offices.  A chartered engineer for almost 20 years, Ian has been active in the professional institution community for most of that period, being a past member of the CIBSE Yorkshire Committee and current member and past chair of his local IHEEM branch committee.  Ian’s current and recent projects include the award-winning Chesterfield NGS Macmillan Unit, Boeing Sheffield and the new Velindre Cancer Centre.



Josie Rothera is a charted Civil Engineer with 10 years of site management experience working for large contractors.  Josie managed teams and resources delivering project values from £9m to £120m, using various contract types.  Moving into academia in 2012 she teaches the management modules in the civil engineering group and the APM courses.  Josie is an active member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, contributes to the thinkBIM events run by CKE and is also a member of women’s professional engineering institutions.  In her spare time, Josie professes to attempt to run up hills and take part in off road triathlons.



Steve Joyce’s career with SES Engineering Services began in 1992 working in most roles from Supervisor up to his current position of Business Director North covering Yorkshire, the North East and North West whilst sitting on the main SES Board of Directors. 

Steve is a team player who fosters close working relationships with clients and their representatives.  His strong technical knowledge, together with a wealth of practical experience, enables him to run the Northern region as well as contributing to the running of SES nationally. 

Steve takes an active interest in best practice methods and innovative new products which he successfully puts into practice to the benefit of SES’ clients.
